For the August 2024 “Third Thursdays” monthly jazz series concert, artist Matthew Brown, author of the graphic novel “Ornette Speaks: A Cartoon Grammar,” used his bold brush style to create portraits in real time, inspired by the live accompaniment of series host keyboardist Dave Bryant, saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra, bassist Jacob William, and drummer Miki Matsuki, along with Daniel Kurganov performing Ornette Coleman’s “Trinity,” a piece for solo violin.

Dave had support for NIGHT VISITORS from the Appalachian Springs Foundation. Read his statement of thanks and his plans for a trilogy of albums created (mostly) with other Ornette Coleman alumni.

From the Wulf‘s Music + Blog review: “… the former pianist of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time group delivers with ‘Night Visitors’ an album in the tradition of Coleman’s compositional and improvisational methodology, Harmolodics. … Bryant and the three musicians improvise amazingly, adding influences from other music styles as rock, blues and beyond into the performances. … Very original and a great tribute to the music of Coleman, taking his concepts forward. Adventurous and a pleasure to listen to!”

From the Financial Times review: “…Pianist / composer / electronic musician Dave Bryant focuses on the harmolodic concepts of the late Ornette Coleman. The under-recorded Bryant played in Coleman’s projects for over a decade — he first met this album’s bassist Charnett Moffet touring with Coleman in 1996 — and has absorbed the flashfire themes, hi-octane interplay and rocking jazz pulse of the harmolodic approach. His latest release, Night Visitors, also a trio, finds Bryant adapting the Coleman aesthetic to an intensely personal ripple and rumble piano style… “Lime Pickle”, as fiery as the name suggests, is the album’s standout track, Coleman’s “Dee Dee” is covered, and drummer Gregg Bendian and bassist Moffet are powerful equal partners.”
